South America Tour
Class D Tour va.VirtualFlight.Online

The South America Tour has to show me the secrets of this continent as I have hardly been there. I visited my family in Curaçao for a holiday and on the inward flight we had a short stop-over at the airport of Caracas.
So eager to learn more on this continent, rich in historical cultures and interesting present day customs.

Logbook
The Logbook has proven to me a reliable method well ... to keep a logbook. This Logbook keeps track of each of the Legs, with some additional info on the used Airplane.

Aircraft

For the South America Tour I will use the Fokker F100. It is a fast Jet Aircraft a little smaller though. It has all comfort for the pilots like good navigation systems, a glass cockpit, autopilot, FMC and easy to follow checklist and startup procedures. And it has been in the news lately for being a starting point for a New Fokker aircraft that will be ready to fly on liquid Hydrogen. Future Fokker-Next-Gen Hydrogen-plane

Leg 1 Mexico City MMMX to Tapachula MMTP
Mexico City:RW23L 239° elev. 7295/12795 ft. VOR 115.60.
Tapachula: RW23 235° elev. 97/6562 ft. VOR 115.30
Mind the elevation of the Mexico airport. Should not prevent the F100 from climbing to higher altitudes, it will affect the climbing rates though. And climbing we have to do as Mexico City is surrounded by still higher mountains. As we are heading to the SSW we have to climb over the mountains at 13000 ft.
After passing the mountains about half way the route, we can start descending to lower altitudes already in preparation for a soft landing just above sea-level.

Leg 2 Tapachula MMTP to Managua MNMG
Managua: RW10 95° elev. 194/8012 ft. VOR 112.10 NDB 290
ILS 109.10 95°.
A nice flight in the dark. Flying not over too many mountains this leg but mainly over low coastal areas and partly over the Pacific. ILS approach with a good visible airport/runway with PAPI lights.

Leg 3 Managua MNMG to Panama City MPMG
Panama City: RW36 08° elev. 31/5906 ft. VOR - NDB -
When I saw the destination, I expected a big , well equipped airport. Nothing like that. MPMG is a tiny airport, with a short runway, neither VOR nor NDB beacons, but luckily it had PAPI light to help me with the proper glideslope. Had to make a hard break, though, with a quick touchdown, full spoilers and reverse power and manual brakes to come to a timely stop. Succeeded!

Leg 4 Panama City MPMG to Cali (Colombia) SKCL
Cali: RW01 14° elev. 3160/9842 ft. VOR 115.50 ILS 109.90 14°
Made a good start on this Panama short runway and made it into the air with some 100 meters to spare. Towards Cali we have to climb over the Mountains, I guess it is the Andes, to about 12000 ft. Cali is also at a high altitude of 3000+ ft, so not much to descend. The route is a little in between the high mountains to make it a little more adventurous.

The Fokker F100 (if I am not wrong, the F70 has the same) has a nice window that pop-up with “Shift+6” and that allows you to control a Pushback of your aircraft from the Gates and allows you to specify a speed while Taxiing. You can set/adjust the left speed box, while the right box shows the actual speed. The brakes will slow you down, but later it will accelerate again till the set Taxi speed; good protection against overspeeding in ACARS checks.

Leg 5 Cali SKCL to Guayaquil SEGU
Guayaquil: RW21 210° elev. 14/9154 ft. VOR 115.90 ILS 110.30.
This leg is proposed to fly right over the Andes, that’s why we have to climb soon after departure to 15,000 ft. I have made a small change and put a course somewhat more to the coastal areas, that prevents the highest peaks and offers some nice beach scenery. The arrival airport sits just above sealevel, where the river Rio Babahoyo flows into the Pacific. Good modern airport with good nav aids to make a smooth landing.

Leg 6 Guayaquil SEGU to Lima SPLP
Lima: RW20 198° elev. 240/8019 ft. VOR -
This flight stays West of the High Mountains and flying just about 4000 ft altitude as an alternative to former high flights. Interesting flight as ultimately I still had to fly over some high mountains anyway. Landing safely on a simple airstrip, without any beacons, no VOR, no NDB, no PAPI. Just a runway, lucky it was daylight as I doubt also any runway-lighting would be available.

Leg 7 Lima SPLP to Tacna SPTN
Tacna: RW02 22° elev. 1538/8202 ft. VOR 116.80 ILS 109.70
A local flight in Peru, different from international flights, as it gives me the feeling of seeing more of the local customs.

Leg 8 Tacna SPTN to Ciudad Perico SASJ
Ciudad Perico: RW33 335° elev. 3091/9698 ft. VOR 112.90
ILS 110.10
This flight into Argentina flies over a big region of high mountains. It looks like the whole of Argentina sits at about 17000 ft with extra peaks here and there. The airport is in a valley but on a kind of platform, difficult to estimate the height. ILS expected but did not work so had to make a circuit to have a proper approach, which resulted in a smooth landing.
